In this essay I wish to reflect upon four portraits of law practice. Each
portrait describes the practice of law in this country, and thereby the function
of lawyers in American society. Each portrait purports to be descriptively accurate
and analytically correct, and not merely a statement of aspiration or a prediction
of the future. Each attempts to explain concisely the nature of the practice of
law and the contribution it makes to the general welfare of society.
